Advantages of Iranian carpets

Iranian carpet is the only flooring whose beauty is doubled due to walking, washing, and light. Moreover, all of these are invaluable competitive advantages that set this valuable national asset apart from other handmade carpets around the world. It takes a lot of time to mention all the features that make Iranian carpets unique compared to other handmade carpets in different parts of the world, and here we will suffice with this amount.

The history of Persian rug

Persian carpet is a symbol of art, genius, culture, and originality. Iranians have been pioneers in carpet weaving. Over time, with care, creativity, and taste, this art has reached a level of perfection that can be considered as a representative of Iranian culture and art. The first documentary evidence of Iranian art in carpet weaving could be found in Chinese texts related to the Sassanid (224 641 AD). Historical evidence indicates the existence of magnificent carpets in the Achaemenes court; as it is said, Alexander the Great was surprised and delighted to see the magnificent Persian carpets in Pasargadae. During the reigns of the Seljuk and the Ilkhanids, carpet weaving was popular as a valuable and profitable art. It is said that the mosques of that period were covered with valuable Iranian carpets. Many historical quotations testify to the antiquity and originality of this historical art.

In which cities is Iranian carpet woven?

Tabriz is one of the most important weaving centers in Iran in the field of handmade carpet weaving. Carpet weaving has a long history in Tabriz. This city was one of the major centers of carpet production and trade during the reign of the Mongol Holakukhan, and along with the city of Herat (in ancient Khorasan and now in Afghanistan); hand-woven carpet weaving is in its development stages. The carpets of this city have always been desirable for foreign and domestic markets due to their durability and interesting patterns, as well as the delicacy of their texture. In Azerbaijan, the texture of the carpet varies from the harshest to the most delicate. Common colors in Azerbaijani dyeing factories are mostly red, blue, green, yellow, burnt orange, beige, pink, or any other market-friendly color. It can be said that about fifty percent of the dyes used in the factories of this province are supplied from natural and plant sources.

Meshkinshahr hand-woven fabrics are very similar to mirage carpets. In the weaving centers of this city, durable and thick carpets and rugs are woven with geometric patterns.

Sarab, located in the southeast of Ardabil, used to be one of the major centers of hand-woven carpet weaving in Azerbaijan province, and today, along with other weaving points in the province, the growth of this industry continues in a favorable way.

Carpet weaving has a long history in Ardabil. During the Safavid period, like many other weaving centers, the weaving of handmade carpets was at its peak and during the Qajar period, it had reached the lowest period of its life. It was about a hundred years ago that the industry began to grow on a limited scale.

In the city of Ahar, dense carpets are woven in variable and rectangular sizes. Unlike the surrounding areas, their designs are influenced by the geometric designs of the Caucasus.

Harris or Hariz is one of the best weaving centers in Iran. The weaving of exquisite and delicate silk carpets has been common in Harris since ancient times, and very exquisite and durable carpets are still woven with geometric (broken) designs and local colors.

Other carpet weaving centers in this area include the village of Lamberan in the northwest of Qaracheh.

Lamber weave rugs are usually coarser woven than scraped rugs.

If we are going to mention several successful cases of carpet weaving in Iran, Nain carpet is undoubtedly one of them.

Due to its quality values, this carpet has not only gained a reputation for merit in the world markets, but has also brought relative prosperity and satisfaction to those involved in carpets in the region, both producers and sellers.

In the old city of Ghaen, durable, dense and beautiful carpets are woven in the style of floral revolving designs with Herati patterns, bats with soft and shiny wools obtained from the sheep of Torbat Heydariyeh and Torbat Jam.

In the city of Sabzevar and its suburbs, with 6,000 weavers working in it, carpets are woven in the pattern of scattering designs and maps and historical buildings, such as the interior of the dome of Sheikh Lotfollah of Isfahan, using the weaving methods of Mashhad.

In the city of Kashmar, formerly called Tarshiz, dense carpets with Persian knots are woven in the style of floral curved designs using designs from Kashan, Kerman, Tabriz, and Varamin.

The underground design of Tabriz is one of them that sometimes have no borders and the whole surface of the carpet is covered with the plans of the capitals of historical buildings and old pots and dishes.

One of the best and most original carpets of Khorasan is woven in Darakhsh located in the southern parts of this province. Its low production, both in the past and now, has had many fans in domestic and foreign markets.

Birjand is another important center of carpet weaving in Khorasan. In this city, before the Second World War, hand-woven carpet weaving was more prosperous and a large number of hand-woven carpet weaving workshops were operating in it.

The city of Yazd has long been one of the most important textile centers in Iran, where the weaving of silk fabrics and shawls has been common.

Ravar is a town on the edge of Lut desert with not so many products in terms of quantity but very important in terms of quality. Its carpets enjoy an unparalleled reputation in domestic and foreign markets, so that the high quality and exceptional carpets of Kerman are known as Kerman-Ravar.

There are other cities that we do not mention them such as holy city of Qom, Saveh,Hamedan, and so on.
