History of Iranian carpets

Carpet weaving and textiles in general are very old in Iran. Beautiful and thought-provoking works from different periods have been discovered that cannot be accurately attributed to a particular period.

Features of Iranian carpets

The position of persian carpets among the masses of traditional and handicrafts left over from the history and culture of Iranian art is at such a level that it is referred to as the cultural identity of the country.  The word carpet in Amid dictionary is derived from the Turkish word qalin meaning fluffy carpet that is woven with yarn and wool in different colors.  There are two types of carpet weaving methods: Turkish weaving method (Turkish knot) and Persian weaving method (Persian knot). In 2014, the city of Kashan has been introduced as the carpet capital of the world. This valuable product has long been considered as the most important export of Iran to the outside world.

The reason for the popularity of Iranian carpets

One of the important reasons for the importance of Iranian carpets could be named:

Types of designs and patterns in Iranian carpets

According to the division of Iran Carpet Company, Iranian carpet designs are divided into 18 main groups and a large number of sub-designs, which are:

1-Designs of antiquities and Islamic buildings

Buildings, tiles, and geometric and decorative shapes of buildings inspire these designs. Throughout history, carpet designers have intervened in major designs and created sub-designs.

2- Shah Abbasi carpets

The basis of all Shah Abbasi designs is based on the use of the famous Shah Abbasi flower in this design. In these designs, Shah Abbasi flowers, along with Khatai bands and sometimes combining them with Islamic ones, offer different types of carpet designs.

3- Arabesque design carpets

The main shape of this design is rotating branches between the leaves. These branches are abstracts of the tree design. There are many types of Arabesque and this pattern is usually repeated in most molds, but in some carpets, this pattern is dominant.

4- Overall-flower design carpets

In this design, all the sections and patterns of the carpet are completely connected and linked. In such a way that it seems that, the painter did not remove the pen from the paper from the beginning to the end of the drawing and created a continuous connection between the different parts of the role.

5- Paisley design carpets

The design is an abstracted cypress tree. Sarkaj carpets of Iran, which are known as Paisley carpets, can be seen in such designs with different sizes and shapes.

6- Adapted design carpets

It is said that most of the designs of this group are very similar to the carpet designs of the border regions of Iran and neighboring countries and even other countries, and for this reason they are called adaptations, such as the designs known as Caucasian and Goblen.

7- Carpets of binding or banding design

The use of terminology means that a small piece of a design is repeated across the carpet, both in length and width.

8- Tree carpets

Although in the design of the carpet, the basis of the work is branches and leaves, but in the tree designs, an attempt has been made to maintain a great resemblance to nature.

9- Turkmen or Bukhara carpets

The design of Turkmen carpets in terms of geometry and broken lines is in line with the tribal and special designs of nomadic people, which are woven mentally and without a pattern.

10- Hunting design carpets

The main foundation of this group of designs is the display of hunting scenes and hunting grounds.

11- Frame design carpets (brick)

The text of the carpet in these designs is divided into different parts or frames that are regularly placed next to each other and inside each frame is decorated with different flowers and leaves.

12- Flower design rugs

All designs of this group are based on natural flowers, especially roses with very bright colors such as yellow, blue, and red.

13- Vase design carpets

In the vase design, the shape of the vase is often seen in different sizes.

14- Prayer-niche design carpets

The main design in this group is based on the altar.

15- In and out fish design carpets

The tangled fish design is one of the oldest and most common carpet designs in Iran.

16-   Design Stripped carpets

This design is known as Qalmadani in some parts of Iran.

17- Geometrical design carpets

In this design, various geometric shapes are used.

18- Integrated design carpets

In addition to the above-mentioned designs, each of which has its own specific letters and has a significant history, over time, other designs have emerged from the combination of two or more designs.
